I’ve never used a Very Healthy Spiral Vegetable Slicer, and can honestly say I’ve never tried veggie noodles. This was definitely a first and not a last for our family. I went with an easy recipe to start, and I even made our usual whole wheat noodles just in case the kids didn’t like it. Making the veggie noodles was SUPER easy, it’s even quicker than boiling noodles!! To make the noodles you’ll need a steamer.
Prepare your vegetables by washing and peeling if necessary. The recipe for the Zucchini noodles doesn’t call for you to remove the peel, but you can if you want. Then you’ll want to insert the vegetable into the slicer with one hand and the other hand will hold the slicer’s handles. Firmly push and twist a the same time to create a long strand, which the kids thought was pretty cool. They kept wanting me to try to make them longer and longer. This process reminds me of sharpening a pencil, it’s really that easy! When your vegetable becomes too short, you can then use the provided end cap to attach to the end of the vegetable. This will help to process the entire vegetable. After you’ve processed the zucchini, place the noodles into the steamer, set it in the microwave and cook for 3-4 minutes. Don’t overcook the Zucchini noodles. Steam until it is just beginning to soften but still al dente.
My boys have always been really good about eating and trying new vegetables, my daughter on the other hand is our picky one. They all tried it and all liked it very much, but they still preferred the whole wheat spaghetti noodles. I think if I were to make this while they weren’t watching they’d probably eat it with no problems. Especially since I used our usual spaghetti sauce, Prego with sausage, and it was wonderful. By the end of dinner we were all fans of making our own noodles with the Very Healthy Spiral Vegetable Slicer! I absolutely recommend this for a healthy alternative to regular noodles!!
